T in the Park Kinross, Scotland - 8 July 2001

by Phil Lawrence

I had a great weekend at T in the park but if truth be told I wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for Texas.

So by the time Sunday came around I was really excited. I met up with a friend from the WWAT mailing list at 6pm and then headed up towards the main stage, where Coldplay were about to come on. I thought they were pretty good, but by the time Beck came on, and we'd managed to get a decent view, I just wanted the real show to start. I was tired, hungry, cold, wet, extremely muddy and my feet were unbelievably painful.

Then the strains of zero zero came over the speakers, and suddenly I felt fine. My heart started pumping fast, then all of a sudden Texas were on stage, the 50,000+ crowd going mad. Shar was sporting a fetching tea-cosy hat and a yellow adidas top. She opened up with IDWAL, which sounded great. Shar was talking to the crowd between all the songs and the atmosphere was terrific.

Other songs they played included Black Eyed Boy, Halo, WWAT, Once in our lifetime, Summer Son (fantastic live, real crowd pleaser), Guitar song, but there were a few that stood out for me. Firstly, an acoustic version of In Demand. I thought this was better than the original, and I really liked the original. Shar sang it really beautifully. Tired of being Alone was superb, but there was a surprise for us. Instead of singing Waterfalls, she sang the chorus of Shaggy's 'It wasn't me'. This got a fantastic reception from the crowd, and show you how Texas are always working on their live performances to keep them innovative.

As on the GH tour, Shar got three guys up on stage to dance along to 'Pull up to the Bumper'. When the second guy told her his name was Bob as well she laughed and shouted 'F**k off', then led the crowd in a rendition of 'Bob the Builder', but cut it short. "Wait a minute, stop, stop, that's a sh**e song" When the audience judged who was the best dancer, one lad got a lukewarm response. I had to laugh when she said to him "You've'e just made a fool of yourself in front of 50,000 people, your not getting laid tonight".

The last song before the encore's was SWYW. Fantastic live, and Shar got the crowd singing along, asking them to sing it really quietly at first, then louder, then Shar took over and the place erupted. Last two songs were Inner Smile and Suspicious minds, and Texas left the stage with the crowd begging for more. "We won't see you again for a while, but we'll be back with something new" Shar told the crowd at the end. Lets hope it's not a long wait.
