Texas at Tower Bridge
from Scotland Today
Scots supergroup Texas took to the stage in London last night in a musical showcase designed to attract visitors back to the capital following July's terror attacks. The band thrilled the intimate crowd with tracks from their latest album at the Tower Bridge gig.
It has carried millions of Londoners and is one of the city's most famous landmarks but up until now Tower Bridge has never been used as a concert venue. But Texas changed that. One hundred and thirty feet above the water, the band played one of the bridges elevated walkways. It is part of a series of events to lure tourists back to the city after the terrorist attacks on July the seventh.
Sharleen Spiteri said: "We like playing in unusual places. We were the first band to play the Eiffel tower, which was great, you know. Virgin Radio was doing this event and they said we would really like Texas to do it so we said yeah it would be something really special and good to do. It's a challenge to play in these kinds of places. We'll take on any venue."
Sharleen lives in the city, in nearby Primrose Hill, and has her own personal reasons for getting involved in the gig.
She said: "I had just come back from Scotland on Thursday morning when the whole thing had happened. The shock, like everybody else. Everybody was just what really happened, what's going on. I think it's a great stage that we live in this day and age and people taking other people's lives so easily.
It may have no seats, be only 12 feet wide and 130 feet up in the air, but that did not stop Texas taking over Tower Bridge. It was an historic and unusual gig for the band put it has put them firmly back in the limelight ahead of their new album out next month.
