Concert review :
Open Air Stage, Tivoli Gardens
Copenhagen, Denmark - August 10, 2001
by Emi
We arrived at Tivoli Gardens before 11 am, the time when the gates open up. We hoped to see a soundcheck or rehearsal, but when we reached the stage we learnt that nothing like that would happen. So there was nothing else for us to do but waiting. We sat by the barriers. The weather was nice really and everything was going well. Shar`s Dad came on the stage and started joking... He took the broom and stated pretending that he'd play I Don`t Want A Lover. After a few hours it was getting worse, cause the rain fell down. We were still kind of alone there...:) About 3 pm. a few people came. First of all, Julie, Ida and her friend Jarbel joined us, so there were... yes, 9 of us together. Some girls also sat beside us... People started coming around 5 or 6 pm. The rain stopped and more and more people came... We caunted the hours...
At 9 pm there was almost no way to get into the separated area, near the stage. We were all standing up in the first row, waiting. Thomas, the guy who was dancing with Shar in Hamburg screamed loudly exactly into my left ear. Alison kept telling me some little fact from the GH tour. Joulie started counting minutes this time, and I had goose-pimples. I was also trying to teach Nina some Polish, she tried to talk to me in German, so we had a good laugh. Schlauch is a great word, BTW.:)))
There was always some movement at the stage. A few minutes to 10 some guy brought drinks for the members of the band. Alison told us about the tea for Sharleen, so we waited... And there it was! "It`s starting, it`s starting" I thought and jumped a few times. I stood a bit to the left to Shar's microphone. At 10 the clocks in Tivoli went off. The crowd started clapping their hands and shouting! Then there was a silence... And... Zero Zero started! YEAH!!! We all went crazy... Ally ran onto the stage and the rest of the band after him. I just couldn`t believe my eyes - I saw them again!
They started with IDWAL of course. There was a kick after "you can`t just leave me", as always - i love this kick... anyway... I think all of them were in a great mood. Just after IDWAL Shar noticed the policeman at the right side of the audience. BTW, I think the audience was pretty good considering it was not a normal Texas concert, but a free one. In Poland it was much worse a year ago, but i suppose that they are just more popular in Denmark.
When some technician ran over the stage, Sharleen`s comment was like "what are you doing here? God, some people need attention all the time... and it`s NOT me... I'm shy and reserved...". I need a bootleg from that gig:)
There was no time for a rest. After IDWAL there was Black Eyed Boy. We were all jumping... there was enough place, thank God. I was feeling like in a dream or something... amazing... All of them were so close, just like we hoped. It was all fantastic!
Then there was Halo... another crazy song. After that Shar went to drink some tea or water. Alison passed me the soft-toy we bought earlier, a winking Danish soldier... Sharleen turned away and I threw it to her... She cought it and I went like "aghhhhh.... yesssss". She came with it to the microphone and read what we`d written "To Sharleen with love Alison and Emily" and she smiled at us and thanked. Those eyes, guys, those eyes are just wonderful... anyway... i jumped a few times - I had to do something, in other case I`d just blow up. What a fantastic feeling...
They did Guitar Song after that, I think it`s really great live, with all the work from Mark One. And then there was In Our Lifetime, during which Jarbel, Ida's friend, threw the nickers on the stage. Shar picked it up, without stopping singing, and show it to the audience... a huge laugh... and then she threw it back, just in my face. I`ve got to say there were pretty new, with a label, so... anyway now I've got something that Shar touched, no matter what it is, right?
For the dancing competition Sharleen chose the policeman, Jarbel of course, and the third one - his name was Roger. It happened that only the policeman was Danish. The dialogs were really funny... Shar even showed what she thinks of most of the men, tapping her finger on her forehead... Then she danced with the policeman, leaving Jarbel to Nicole, and Roger to Charlotte... It was really great fun watching it... Shar`s trousers kept falling down when the policeman hold her, and she kept pulling it up with that funny look at her face... She even wore the policeman's hat! It was close and Charlotte would fall down, cause Roger tried to pick her up. So, Pull Up To The Bumper was really interesting at Tivoli.
After that I got so amazed by the acoustic version of In Demand... Ths song sounded so beautiful, it`s like made for Sharleen to play it with the guitar only. That was the first time I heard it, so I was completely blown away... felt like in heaven...
Next was Summer Son, and then another crazy song - When We Are Together. We jumped as high as we could, sung also that loud and shouted from time to time. I think that Summer Son is really great when it`s played live, better than the studio version... it`s so rough... even when you have no strenght left, you feel like you have to jump... Sharleen was going crazy at these two, running from one side of the stage to another, shouting and jumpimg too. During When We Are together she even made her way to the both - left and right - outskirts of the stage, so she had to pass those high constructions... The crowd at the both sides went mad...
And then there was the time for Say What You Want. It`s true that the audience wasn`t yelling as loud as people do at the normal concert, but... anyway we shouted "NOOOOO" as loud as we could. It was similar with the "TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME" moment in Black Eyed Boy. We shouted, but it seams that we were quite alone, lol, I suppose that the audience didn`t know the trick... Anyway everyone sung during SWYW, well I hope so, cause you can`t really hear how the crowd sing when you yell yourself...:))) I love the moment with the hands during SWYW, I mean the "WOOOOO WOOOOO" part, it`s really extraordinary to see all the people waving.
There was one encore of course, with Inner Smile and Suspicious Minds, and I was just doing all I could (we all did) after 11 hours of waiting and 1,5 hour of jumping. I didn`t feel tired, when I see Texas I just forget about those things. Plus I`ve got this funny feeling that they watch me too when I'm in a first row, so I want to show them what I came there for. Charlotte and Nicole started running from one side of the stage to another, just like Shar did. She was also doing all she could, she was like everywhere. But she ended Suspicious Minds just in front of me and I caught myself thinking "remember, remember...".
And I will. I still can see it very clearly...
