Sharleen to star in cyber thriller

SHARLEEN Spiteri is set for movie stardom after landing the lead role in a new cyber thriller.

The Texas singer will make her film debut in 3 Blind Mice as a computer hacker-turned-detective alongside American History X star Edward Furlong.

The film is described as a tense thriller set in the world of virtual reality and cyber crime.

It's Sharleen's first film part, although she was forced to turn down the chance to take the female lead in Baz Luhrmann's blockbuster Moulin Rouge.

That role eventually went to Nicole Kidman.

Filming of 3 Blind Mice will begin in January.

Her spokesman William Rice denied the movie would mean the end of Sharleen's chart-topping Scots band.

He said: "It's true that Sharleen is going to be starring in the film 3 Blind Mice. It's a private thing that she wants to do between albums by the band.

"The film is aimed primarily at the European market. It shoots in January and will be in cinemas by next spring.

"It doesn't affect anything Texas do. They will be back in the studio next year."

Sharleen, currently taking time off before filming begins, has also agreed to lay down a score for a new film from Taxi Driver director Martin Scorsese.

Sharleen said: "Martin Scorsese has asked us to do some film music.

"He is producing a movie and wants us to write something for it. We are working on a song and some other soundtrack music.

"Scorsese's film is set in the midwest of America and is very dark. Watching it made me feel like I had a pillow over my head. There'll be incidental music too."

The moves mark a change in direction for Sharleen and her group.

In addition, Texas have also provided music for an upcoming, as yet untitled, slasher movie

Sharleen added: "A friend of mine, Sean Ellis, has made a short movie which I have agreed to do the music for. It's a horror film. I have seen it and it's fantastic.

"I'm not allowed to say what it is about - except that this woman gives another woman a lift but decides to dump her, only for her husband to pick her up later.

"When he stops at the lights, the old woman stabs him to death. It is terrifying.

"Sean has just come back from LA and there is so much interest in the film.

"My name is there at the end of the movie so I'm chuffed."

Sharleen has no regrets about turning down the Moulin Rouge role opposite pal Ewan McGregor.

At the time of filming, she was intent on promoting the band's chart- topping album The Hush.

Sharleen, who has enjoyed a string of hits with Texas including Say What You Want and Halo, revealed: "I get offered acting parts every week. Baz Luhrmann wanted a singer for the role because it is a musical and told me I would have to be in Australia filming for six months.

"I told him I could sing but that I wasn't an actress but he still wanted me to do it. It was very flattering but I had an album to promote and music is still my first love.

"Jerry Bruckheimer, the Hollywood producer, asked if I would star in the new film he is making.

"I was also asked to play a Polish prisoner of war in a love story but, as I say, being in a band comes first."
