Spiteri spits at the Brits

from Worldpop, 27 January 200

Just as the final nominees for this year's Brit Awards are announced, Texas' Sharleen Spiteri has slammed the organisers for not including the group in this year's nominations.

'I would have bet £1m beforehand that we weren't going to be included,' Sharleen tells worldpop. 'The Brits people aren't at the top of my list to be honest. They haven't been great to us. We've been going as a band for 15 years and we haven't won one award. When I see the Spice Girls win an Outstanding Contribution award and Five picking up prizes then it's just a joke to me. We've got a current No 1 album, our last album was a best seller. The public vote for us each time they buy our record. That's enough for me. I've got an Ivor Novello award at home for songwriting and that's far more important because it's voted for by fellow songwriters. The Brits is voted for largely by record companies and it's just politics.'

Sharleen adds that most of Texas' next album is already written and the band have had an offer to record the soundtrack to a forthcoming British movie although she won't reveal what the title is. 'I've been offered film roles in the past but I think acting is a big risk. You film your scene then it's cut and edited and you have no control over it. I'm used to being in complete control of my music and that wouldn't happen with film.'

Yesterday, the nominations for Best British Video and Best British Single at this year's Brit awards were announced with Craig David increasing his nominations tally to a record breaking six categories.
