The Cornbury Oxford Festival, Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England - 9 July 2006 by Sheryl Last minute decision to go really as Oxford nearly 250 miles away from us here in North Wales, but it was worth travelling every single mile. First of all we arrived to hear the closing song of Nerina Pallots' set (Who Wants To Go To War) - v. good, only song I knew of hers anyway!!!. Then about half an hour, and a pancake later The Pretenders came on - great to see such an icon as Chrissie Hynde live on stage singing all the classics such as: Talk Of The Town, Don't Get Me Wrong, Kid, Brass In Pocket etc, etc - v.v. good indeed!! At around 9.15pm the presenter came on to announce TEXAS, the 'boys' strolled on stage - with Ally's opening bars of 'I Don't Want A Lover, - then Sharleen arrived, full of energy and raring to go!!, after IDWAL, straight into 'Getaway' - belted that one out as well (only the one set of drums on stage last night - no Michael tonight on drums). Sharleen appeared to be enjoing herself on stage - usual banter with band and crowd. Sang 'Halo' and 'In Demand, - v.v. good everyone dancing. Then 'competiton time' between Eddie and Michael - Eddie sang Bowie's 'Heroes' and Michael sang Elton John's 'Your Song' (I think those were the song's sang??), Sharleen confessing to everyone that Michael PRACTICES!! - however, everyone at the 'Cornbury' thought that Michael was the deserved winner, as the cheering far greater than for Eddie's effort - Sharleen stated that 'Michael would be impossible to be with now for the rest of the evening! - Thank You Cornbury". Straight into 'Sleep', where Sharleen got everyone to light up their mobiles to help Tony along, then B.E.B - brilliant as ever. Toned things down a bit with Sharleen on the piano for 'Nevermind" - brilliant, as usual, then up tempo again for 'Inner Smile' - during which Sharleen stood right opposite me and smiled, Thanks Shar - made my night, well we have met twice now, first time at the Instore signing at HMV, Liverpool, Oct '05, and May '06, at the after show get together afetr the Hammersmith concert via 'Pete' the builder and his family - so we (me and Shar) are virtually friends now!!!!(ha ha ha). Finished off the set with 'Summer Son', fantastic, as ever, then off stage for a while to return to SWYW - to this day I still get goosebumps hearing this song, and excited from the slow bit at the end to the 'Wu Tang Clan' bit at the end. Great to see Sharleen and the boys enjoying themselves so much on stage - I stuffed my way to the barriers at the front, really getting the atmosphere of it all, Sharleen quite taken with a guy in a hat, and quite amused with a woman playing a tambourine that Chrissie Hynde had thrown into the crowd earlier. - Sharleen's a great 'front person' (God knows what the term is??), back at home now pondering where to go next - Monaco sounds good (24/7/06) as on my birthday, maybe one day Texas may perform up here in north Wales - Well, I can dream can't I. Thanks again Texas - another good one |
