Sharleen supports Greg Rusedski
from The Daily Express - June 28, 2001
Tennis star Greg Rusedski has a lucky mascotte, Scottish pop singer Sharleen Spiteri.
On her first visit to Wimbledon the lead singer of Texas kept her fingers crossed for the entire match as Britain's Greg blitzed his way to victory against Byron Black.
Sharleen, wearing a stunning floral dress, met the British number two when they appeared together on a television programma two years ago and later became firm friends with Greg's wife Lucy.
Sharleen and Lucy, both wearing cool Aviator-style sunglasses, sat side by side, chatting between points and cheering Greg's best shots, as he reeled off a series of unstoppable winners that sent the line judges and ball boys diving for cover on Court Two.
In the cramped surroundings, one line judge was struck a painfull blow to the side of the head and the British star's 138mph services left clear imprints on the canvas at the back of the court.
Sharleen was clearly impressed afterwards. "It is really fantastic to be at Wimbledon for the first time" she said. "Greg played brilliantly today and I really enjoyed myself."
The ultra-quick, straight sets win in the second round against a formidable opponent meant the singer was left with plenty of time for her to sample the hospitality on offer.
"I'm off to stuff my face full of strawberries and cream now", she said. Rusedski, who felt he had played better then ever, will clearly have to invite his celebrity friend courtside again if she inspires him to such heights.
