Concert Review :
Valby Hallen, Copenhagen, Denmark - 16 March 2001
by Brigitte Sundstrup
What a night......
Arriving at valby hallen an hour before the show started, we walked directly to the frontrow (second row to be exact)...where we stayed throughout the whole show - we were 5 girls together all huge texas fans, and we had been warming up all afternoon listening to the cdīs, drinking beer and just getting in the mood...so when the moment finally arrived, we were totally estatic.....
Reef were a dissapointment - annoying as mats put it.....But that was in fact the only dissapointment of the whole show - and it gave us time to use the bathroom.
As the band entered the stage to the sound of zero zero the crowd went wild and from the moment Sharleen started singing she had us in her hand...it was amazing to see how even the smallest wink of an eye made the crowd go crazy, she was in total control and her voice was better than ever going from deep and soulful to pure and clear when she hit the high notes, especially well demonstrated in the acoustic version of "put your arms around me".
Sharleen seemed to be in a very a good mood, telling small anecdotes and joking about the conflict between Denmark and Sweden, which she said she understood, because she is scottish...We also heard how the new drummer was fond of danish girls, and of course we got the story of how she was mistaken for Elvis - this was a new version I think: she was sitting in the hotel lobby (in her pyjamas?!) and Texas was being played on the radio, when this guy approches her and tells her that now he knows who she is: Elvis....
Sharleen was actually close to loosing control at one point.....The usual thing with getting a guy on stage was almost getting out of hand, because this guy wasnīt shy at all. In fact he was extremely selfconfident and flirtet so much that Sharleenīs face turned completely red. When she asked him where he was from, he asked her right back which obviously came as a big surprise to her. He then said that he had been dreaming about being with her - and he wanted to know what she was doing after the show and if he could sleep in her hotel bed with her. She tried to play it cool and asked if he was interested in the two back up singers as well to which re replied "I was actually thinking four...?" Very bright and funny guy with a dirty mind, who was so outspoken that she had to tell him "hey - this is my show....Are all danish guys like that?" When they finally started dancing after a long conversation, he instantly grabbed her butt, and a little later he tried to push up her shirt with his head, so she had to hold it down and almost couldnīt sing...The band was laughing so hard in the background.
Other highligts were of course the energetic crowd pleasers such as "I donīt want a lover", "Halo" and "Summer Son" but also "Insane" and "Tired of Being Alone" were among my favourites. The Elvis cover was a great succes as well as "Say What You Want", where the crowd sang along and sharleen went solo - beautiful - and a perfect end to an amazing evening, where the band demonstrated their great skills as musicians and Sharleen was the perfect hostess with her great personality, wonderful voice and charismatic stageshow.
The enthousiastic crowd loved every minute of it, and even the newspapers from the tabloids to the more serious papers agreed.....they got super reviews with headlines such as: "The perfect rush", " Charming Sharleen" and so on - all extremely positive, which is rare.
