Concert review
NEC, Birmingham, UK - 18 February 2001
by Lou Hunt
After seeing the band at Nottingham the previous weekend, I was admittedly expecting much the same. To my suprise, Birmingham played host to one of the best gigs I have ever been to.
Yes the set list was the same, and yes Sharleen told 'that story' about the cab journey, but somehow it all felt different. I'm not sure if it was because of where I was standing, or the fact that I had travelled 4 hours in the thickest fog I've ever know to get there, it just everything seemed like it had much more energy and feeling.
The crowd were amazing, dancing about and singing along from In Demand through to Say What You Want, the guys in the seating area actually stood up too (not just for Summer Son), and the band seemed to be really fired up. Loads of back chat from the crowd ensured there were innuendos a plenty for everyone, and at one point near the end there was nearly a brawl as a member of the crowd tried to grab the towel Sharleen threw in.
I guess the one thing that really makes a Texas gig is the fact that this band can really play live, and perform live, and you can tell that the crowd in Birmingham really appreciated that.
It's hard to review the songs, because we all know them and we all love them, but you've never really 'heard' them until you hear them the way they were meant to be played. Texas at their best are a live band and long may they be so.
Lou
Oh and there was even a minor smurf incident!
